The Biden administration has stuck by its border policy even as 200,000 migrants were arrested in the month of July. The Department of Homeland Security has found itself torn between two messages, with one being spread by the head of the department and the other by the facts.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials, migrant arrests at the southern border reached a 21-year record high in July. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the Biden administration is “confronting” the border crisis.
Mayorkas attempted to escape responsibility for the 212,672 encounters by shifting the blame to the Trump administration for the migrant influx. He also tried to twist President Trump’s strong policies by calling them unfair to illegal immigrants.
“As I think all of you know, in the prior administration, Title 42 authority of the Centers for Disease Control was used to expel unaccompanied children regardless of their age and that is a practice that we discontinued immediately in the Biden administration,” said Mayorkas.

However, the problems brought on by Joe Biden’s border crisis don’t end with immigration. CBP agents in July seized 46,000 pounds of illegal drugs. While sizable, this amount actually marks the lowest in the last four Julys, meaning either drug smugglers have chosen to take a break to generously allow the waves of immigrants to sneak their way across the border first or CBP is just simply seizing less.
In the first seven months of the year, there were 7,344 NCIC arrests, or otherwise arrests where the immigrant was wanted on the National Crime Information Center. Those arrests marked an increase to last year’s total of 7,108. Although, Mayorkas said the record numbers aren’t due to a Biden administration policy, rather it has to do with the internal polices of Central and South American countries.
“Worsening conditions, of course, in the origin, including poverty, a rise in violence, and corruption,” Mayorkas pointed out.
While the Biden administration continues to contort itself around accepting responsibility, border states have been working to draft their own plans of attack as Republican lawmakers try desperately to protect their citizens before an already perilous crisis gets worse.
