California Native Mohammed Faizi and his Afghan-American family spoke out after escaping from the turmoil amid the U.S. withdrawal. The family spoke at a news conference in San Diego on Thursday.

Faizi went on to say, “we are safe here now, but it was a really tough time that we came out from Afghanistan.”

The San Diego based family, who were stranded at the Kabul airport for four days before finally being able to evacuate, said they were questioned upon departure.

“Very hard to for us to pass the Taliban gate and they told us, why you guys are leaving Afghanistan? Why are you guys not staying here with us? I told them, that’s our country,” Faizi explained. “That’s my nation. We’re leaving here.”

The Faizi family was in Afghanistan since July 19 to see family one last time. From Uzbekistan to Germany to New York, the family eventually returned to the United States and said the kids have already returned to school.

“So finally, finally, we came here and it was not easy,” Faizi explained. “I was four days stuck inside the base with my five kids, through the sunshine, no shelter, nothing.”

Faizi said he had California Rep. Darrell Issa (R) and the U.S. military to thank as they played a crucial role in making sure families returned home before the August 31 deadline.

One family with three children however, is still trapped.
