The Rolling Stones have reportedly retired one of their most popular rock songs because the lyrics pertain to slavery.
The lyrics actually detail the horrors of slavery. But try telling that to the woke cancel crowd.
“The Stones have not played the 1971 hit ‘Brown Sugar’ on their current tour and said the blues classic has been removed from their setlist,” the New York Post reported.
“You picked up on that, huh?” guitarist Keith Richards said when asked by The Los Angeles Times why the band hasn’t been playing the song on the current “No Filter” tour.
“I don’t know. I’m trying to figure out with the sisters quite where the beef is. Didn’t they understand this was a song about the horrors of slavery? But they’re trying to bury it. At the moment I don’t want to get into conflicts with all of this s**t. But I’m hoping that we’ll be able to resurrect the babe in her glory somewhere along the track,” Richards told the Times.
Singer Mick Jagger chimed in. “We’ve played ‘Brown Sugar’ every night since 1970, so sometimes you think, ‘We’ll take that one out for now and see how it goes,’” he said. “We might put it back in.” Jagger also said “the set list in a stadium show, it’s kind of a tough one.”
The song is one of the most performed by the Stones, who have played it live more than 1,100 times, second to only “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” according to setlist.fm.
Jagger said way back in 1995 “I never would write that song now. I would probably censor myself. I’d think, ‘Oh God, I can’t. I’ve got to stop. I can’t just write raw like that,’” he told Rolling Stone magazine.
