A high school football game in North Carolina leaves parents in shock after a controversial banner was held up before the start of the game.
Members of the Butler High School cheer squad in Charlotte are being criticized for holding up a sign last week that said “Sniff Sniff You Smell That? Privilege.” The sign was a dig at the opposing team, a Catholic private school.
One offended parent argued by no means does going to a private school imply everyone is privileged and rich. She mentioned how she raises her son on her own and works hard to be able to afford to send him to Charlotte Catholic.
“My son is in fourth grade and he mentioned it, and he is biracial. His comment was ‘mom, don’t they see that we have other Black boys on our team?’ I was silent at first,” said Melissa Swanson. “I didn’t know what to say, it’s unfortunate that these things have to be discussed every day. It’s not right and that’s why I’m so proud to have him in the private school system because we teach kindness here.”
Officials from the public school have since apologized to Charlotte Catholic and the cheerleaders have written an apology letter.
