Former Vice President Mike Pence is expected to make remarks in Washington, D.C., today calling upon the Supreme Court of the United States to overturn Roe v. Wade when it rules on the upcoming Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization abortion case, which challenges a Mississippi law that bans most abortions past 15 weeks.
“We are asking the Court, in no uncertain terms, to make history,” the potential 2024 presidential candidate will say, according to The Hill. “We are asking the Supreme Court of the United States to overturn Roe v. Wade and restore the sanctity of human life to the center of American law.”
The Daily Wire previously reported that the law being challenged in Dobbs v. Jackson “is a direct confrontation to the pre-viability requirement. On agreeing to hear the case, the court implied it would make a decision on all pre-viability abortion laws.”
Since 1973, the year Roe v. Wade was ruled, more than 60 million babies have been killed by abortions in America. Pence is expected to slam the decision, saying it “inflicted a tragedy not only on our nation, but on humanity, that is hard to fathom.”
“When the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade — and I believe with all my heart that day will come, either now or in the near future — it will not come as a surprise to anyone,” Pence will also say on Tuesday according to the Hill. “It will simply be the culmination of a 50-year journey whose course and destination have been set by the will of the American people.”
Oral arguments are in Dobbs v. Jackson are scheduled for Wednesday, December 1.
As noted by SCOTUSblog.com, when former President Donald Trump ran for the presidency in 2016, the then-Republican candidate promised to nominate Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.
Trump may follow through on that promise, despite not being in office, as his confirmed nominees Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett could be the deciding factor in the latest abortion case.
Given the enormity of the potential decision, Dobbs has received attention from both sides of the political aisle. Over the summer, at least 11 GOP governors co-signed a brief in the case, urging SCOTUS to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The Daily Wire reported at the time that Florida’s Ron DeSantis, alongside Kay Ivey of Alabama, Doug Ducey of Arizona, Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, Brian Kemp of Georgia, Brad Little of Idaho, Kim Reynolds of Iowa, Mike Parson of Missouri, Greg Gianforte of Montana, J. Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, and Greg Abbott of Texas, signed the brief, which read in part:
For too long, the Federal Government has dived (not just waded) into issues reserved to the States under the Constitution. Although those forays usually come from the political branches, they have, on occasion, come from this Court as well. Roe and Casey are quintessential examples of such misadventures. The Court should take this opportunity to correct the mistakes in its abortion jurisprudence and recognize that the text and original understanding of the Fourteenth Amendment have nothing to do with abortion. Rather than creating a federal constitutional right, the Court should leave regulating abortion to the States, where the people may act through the democratic process. This Court should hold as much—and in the process, help restore the constitutional (but currently disrupted) balance between the Federal Government and the States.
It has been rumored that both DeSantis and Pence are considering 2024 runs. The Hill article makes note that this is the latest speaking appearance for Pence. He will reportedly be joined at the National Press Club by Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List.
