Jussie Smollett was convicted Thursday night “of five Class 4 felonies for lying to police about a hate crime he staged against himself back in 2019.” The “Empire” actor had told police that he was attacked by two people who shouted “This is MAGA country” at him while beating him and hurling racist and homophobic slurs. In response, North Carolina’s Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson slammed the hate-crime hoaxer via Facebook, stating that “Jussie Smollett committed the ultimate act of disrespect; he spit on us.”

“He spit on the collective graves of every black person murdered because of the color of their skin,” Robinson continued. “He spit on the grave of every person murdered because of their lifestyle. He spit on the grave of every person murdered because of their political beliefs.”

“He spit in the face of every American and America itself. He forged a sharp-edged weapon from a LIE and attempted to use it to tear open the old wounds of bigotry while bearing false witness against his political opponents and the Nation that has blessed him so richly,” Robinson added.

The outspoken conservative also blamed Smollett’s allies in media, politics, and beyond for perpetuating the hoax.

“And he wasn’t alone,” he added. “Every politician, pundit, actor, religious leader, and member of the media that rushed to judgement and pushed Smollett’s ridiculous story was right there as well, spitting gleefully upon the graves of the true victims of violence and willfully wielding the weapon of lies.”

“Jussie Smollett committed the ultimate act of disrespect; he spit on us. The truth is revealed. Apologies are owed. Justice should be demanded,” he concluded.

Robinson’s comments stand in stark contrast to the numerous Democratic politicians who expressed support for Smollett in January 2019 when he first reported that he had been “attacked.” As covered by The Daily Wire, Democrats like Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, United States Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Vice President Kamala Harris, and President Joe Biden have all been silent since Smollett was convicted.

In 2019, Smollett told ABC News’s Robin Roberts that he was “forever changed” because of the “attack.” When asked, “What motivated this attack?” Smollett replied:

I could only go off of their words. I mean who says f***** Empire n*****, this MAGA country, ties a noose around your neck, and pours bleach on you? And this is just a friendly fight? I will never be the man that this did not happen to — I am forever changed. And I don’t subscribe to the idea that everything happens for a reason, but I do subscribe to the idea that we have the right and responsibility to make something meaningful out of the things that happen to us good and bad.

Roberts asked him, “What do you feel people need to hear the most from the story?”

Smollett replied: “I think that what people need to hear it’s just the truth…It’s just the truth because everybody has their own idea. Some are healing and some are hurtful but I just want young people, young members of the LGBTQ community, young black children to know how strong that they are — to know the power that they hold in their little pinky.”

Smollett’s story of what happened that night was determined to be a lie during his trial.
