Viewers are confused and annoyed by this year’s celebrity-free and all virtual Golden Globe awards ceremony. Winners were announced on Twitter, which could have been a smart alternative to the traditional televised show. But followers slammed the accompanying text, the graphics, and the overall feel of the award show.

Followers said the format was confusing and awkward, plus it was difficult to follow along with.

“It takes 43 muscles to smile. Thanks for the workout Andrew Garfield and congratulations for taking home the #GoldenGlobe for Best Actor—Motion Picture—Musical/Comedy,” one confusing tweet read.

“Nowhere in these deeply chaotic Golden Globe tweets do they even mention the projects people are winning for,” New York Times writer Kyle Buchanan said in reply, according to Daily Mail.

Followers also took issue with the content of the official tweets. One of the worst was in conjunction with the Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy prize, which went to Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.”

The text that announced the winner said, “If laughter is the medicine then West Side Story is the cure for what ails you.” Only, fans immediately jumped on the text, saying the re-telling of Romeo and Juliet is hardly a comedy. This led the social team to replace the tweet by saying, “If music is the best medicine @WestSideMovie is the cure for what ails you,” a line which didn’t technically make sense.

“Okay, @goldenglobes, at least ‘laughter is the best medicine’ is a thing. Music is the best medicine’ isn’t a thing. Tonight, tonight, the world is full of light as @WestSideMovie wins the Golden Globe for Best Picture — Musical/Comedy. That’s the tweet,” one follower suggested.

“Congrats to the executive that hired their nephew to run the Golden Globes social,” another Twitter user said. “I bet they will never write a series of tweets with the punchline being the winner’s name ever, ever again.”

Another summed up the whole mess of an event, saying, “Golden Globes used to be about watching celebrities get hammered and go off book. Then last year it was literally on zoom and no one knew what was what. And now we have these unhinged tweet announcements. Props to the Golden Globes for always choosing absolute chaos.”

Most likely due to the confusion, many celebrities neglected to react to wins on their own official social media accounts. But one winner did express excitement at clinching a Golden Globe award.

MJ Rodriguez made history as the first openly transgender nominee to win a Golden Globe. Rodriguez won the Best Actress in a TV Drama for work on the FX series “Pose,” which just aired its series finale in June 2021.

“OMG OMGGG!!!! @goldenglobes Wow! You talking about sickening birthday present! Thank you! This is the door that is going to Open the door for many more young talented individuals,” Rodriguez shared on Instagram.

“They will see that it is more than possible. They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS. To my young LGBTQAI babies WE ARE HERE the door is now open now reach the stars!!!!! @goldenglobes. To the nominees we are Queens. I’m so happy to share space with you!
