The body positivity movement which seeks to normalize and celebrate people of all sizes is in full swing. “Euphoria” actress Barbie Ferreira said fans expect her to be part of it because she has a curvier figure than the industry standard. However, the 25-year-old model and actress recently explained how she wasn’t fully on board with becoming a poster child for the cause.
Further, the actress admitted to feeling the pressure to act like she’s happy all the time when she really isn’t.
“I feel like I had a lot of things come up emotionally because of the pandemic, and putting some of that into this season was therapeutic for me,” Ferreira told WhoWhatWear during an interview. “I hope other people [watching] can also feel the same way and release the pressure of being perfect and happy all the time. Because that just doesn’t exist.”
Ferreira continued, discussing how the movement was likely more of a trend rather than a permanent change in perception.
“I think bigger bodies are not as ‘trendy’ as they used to be, which is really sad to me. But it’s more of a conversation of the fact that we all struggle with self-love, and I don’t think any young person has really figured it out yet,” she continued.
The “Euphoria” star also talked about her fashion choices aren’t meant to be statements or show support for the body positivity crowd, but are rather just an example of her wearing what she wants to wear.
“It’s not radical for me to be wearing a crop top,” she said. “[Comments like those are] just backhanded compliments. I’ve been doing this since I was 16. I’m 25.”
Ferreira also discussed how she feels pressured “of being this person who ‘loves themselves.’”
“It’s so funny that people just assume that,” she told WhoWhatWear. “What — did I say that? I never said that. You guys just say that. You posted that on me.”
Ferreira isn’t the only actress being co-opted into the body positivity movement against her will. Recently, “Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington on the popular historical drama, said she was fed up with fans commenting on her weight and figure.
“Hello! So just a thing- if you have an opinion about my body please, please don’t share it with me,” the Irish actress wrote in the photo caption.
“Most people are being nice and not trying to be offensive but I am just one real life human being and it’s really hard to take the weight of thousands of opinions on how you look being sent directly to you every day,” the 35-year-old star continued.
“If you have an opinion about me that’s ok, I understand I’m on TV and that people will have things to think and say but I beg you not to send it to me directly.”
