The United States Department of State issued a new warning to Americans in Ukraine early Monday morning, advising any U.S. citizen in the Eastern European nation to “leave immediately” via private or commercial air travel, as there is a strong possibility that a Russian invasion would disrupt air travel of all kinds.
“The Department of State continues to urge U.S. citizens to depart Ukraine immediately using commercial or private means due to the increased threat of Russian military action,” the State Department said in a press release on Monday. “The security situation in Ukraine continues to be unpredictable throughout the country and may deteriorate with little notice. There is a strong likelihood that any Russian military operations would severely restrict commercial air.”
This announcement came shortly after the French government announced that U.S. President Joe Biden agreed to meet “in principle” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as The Daily Wire reported Sunday night, in hopes of preventing what some government experts predict would be the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II:
“The President of the Republic spoke with the President of the United States, Mr. Joe BIDEN and the President of the Russian Federation, Mr. Vladimir PUTIN,” the statement said. “He proposed a summit to be held between President BIDEN and President PUTIN and then with relevant stakeholders to discuss security and strategic stability in Europe. Presidents BIDEN and PUTIN have both accepted the principle of such a summit.”
“The substance will have to be prepared by Secretary BLINKEN and Minister LAVROV during their meeting on Thursday 24 February,” the statement continued. “It can only be held at the condition that Russia does not invade Ukraine. The President of the Republic will work with all stakeholders to prepare the content of these discussions.”
On February 12, the U.S. government advised Americans in Ukraine that Poland would be opening their borders to U.S. citizens fleeing Ukraine, but that Americans must show proof of having received the COVID-19 vaccine for entry into the country.
“The security situation in Ukraine continues to be unpredictable due to the increased threats of Russian military action and can deteriorate with little notice,” the State Department said in a press release at the time. “U.S. citizens in Ukraine should depart immediately using commercial or other privately available transportation options.”
“Poland has indicated to the U.S. government that U.S. citizens may now enter Poland through the land border with Ukraine,” the government agency added.
While “no advanced approval is required,” according to the press release, the U.S. government encouraged Americans “traveling into Poland by land from Ukraine to cross at the Korczowa-Krakovets or Medyka-Shehyni border crossings.”
U.S. citizens need to present “a valid U.S. passport and proof of COVID-19 vaccination,” according to the U.S. government. “Travelers are also encouraged to present a negative test result from a PCR or antigen COVID-19 test, which will facilitate entry into Poland.”
That option still remains available to Americans leaving Ukraine.
