Biden administration National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan shared on Monday that the U.S. believes Russia is preparing a “violent” invasion of Ukraine in the near future.

Sullivan shared the concerning comments regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s potential plans during an interview on NBC’s “Today.”

“We believe that any military operation of the size, scope, and magnitude of what we believe the Russians are planning will be extremely violent. It will cost the lives of Ukrainians and Russians, civilians and military personnel alike,” Sullivan said.

“But we also have intelligence to suggest that there will be an even greater form of brutality because this will not simply be some conventional war between two armies. It will be a war waged by Russia on the Ukrainian people to repress them, to crush them, to harm them,” he added.

Sullivan also argued the U.S. is “prepared to respond decisively if Russia moves on Ukraine,” though diplomatic efforts continue.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki released a statement from the White House on Sunday reaffirming the president’s efforts to continue diplomatic efforts “until the moment an invasion begins.”

“As the President has repeatedly made clear, we are committed to pursuing diplomacy until the moment an invasion begins. Secretary Blinken and Foreign Minister Lavrov are scheduled to meet later this week in Europe, provided Russia does not proceed with military action. President Biden accepted in principle a meeting with President Putin following that engagement, again, if an invasion hasn’t happened,” Psaki said in the statement.

“We are always ready for diplomacy. We are also ready to impose swift and severe consequences should Russia instead choose war. And currently, Russia appears to be continuing preparations for a full-scale assault on Ukraine very soon,” she added.

Biden reportedly also held a call on Sunday with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the situation in Ukraine. The call suggested a meeting to be held between Biden and Putin on the condition that Russia does not invade Ukraine.

The news came as Russian military forces reportedly received orders on Sunday from Putin to invade Ukraine, according to a report on alleged U.S. intelligence. The Daily Wire previously reported:

“The President was very clear that he is convinced by U.S. intelligence that this invasion will happen, that President Putin decided to do it,” CBS News host Margaret Brennan said. “How was he that certain?”

“Because the intelligence says that Russian troops have actually received orders now, to proceed with the invasion,” CBS News correspondent David Martin said. “So not only are they moving up closer and closer to the border into these attack positions, but the commanders on the ground are making specific plans for how they would maneuver in their sector of the battlefield.”

“They’re doing everything that American commanders would do once they got the order to proceed,” he added.
