Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott urged his state’s retailers on Saturday to voluntarily remove Russian products from shelves following the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, noting, “Texas stands with Ukraine.”
Abbott shared the request in a Twitter post on Saturday afternoon to stand in support of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion last week.
“I’ve asked the members of the Texas Restaurant Association, Texas Package Stores Association & all Texas retailers to voluntarily remove all Russian products from their shelves,” Abbott wrote.
“Texas stands with Ukraine. #StandWithUkraine,” he added.

In an earlier post on Saturday, Abbott also celebrated the leadership of Ukraine’s president for remaining in his country and arguing the U.S. needs energy independence.
“‘Ukraine-Russia war: Kyiv still standing on Day 3, Zelenskyy refuses to leave country.’ This is a leader. The U.S. must do more to end this war. Sanctions are not enough. Ukraine needs weapons. US & EU need energy independence. #StandWithUkraine,” Abbott wrote.

Abbott has repeatedly advocated for American energy independence. The Texas governor spoke strongly against the Biden administration’s energy policies in a Fox News interview on Thursday regarding Ukraine.
“From day one, Biden has prohibited our ability to drill oil & natural gas. The situation in Russia & Ukraine will make gas prices even higher. Texas can drill enough oil & natural gas to keep prices low here in America & in Europe if Biden would get out of the way,” Abbott tweeted.

Texas is also not alone in calling for the removal of Russian products. On Saturday, Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox signed an executive order that requires the state’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to eliminate all products “produced in and branded by Russia” from its shelves.
“Russia’s ruthless attack on a sovereign nation is an egregious violation of human rights,” Gov. Cox said in a statement. “Utah stands in solidarity with Ukraine and will not support Russian enterprises, no matter how small the exchange.”

New Hampshire Republican Gov. Chris Sununu issued a similar executive order over the weekend.
“This morning I signed an Executive Order instructing @nhliquorwine outlets to begin removing Russian-made and Russian-branded spirits from our liquor and wine outlets until further notice. New Hampshire stands with the people of Ukraine in their fight for freedom,” Sununu wrote.

President Joe Biden shared a press release on Saturday that also noted increased “restrictive economic measures” the U.S. is taking alongside European leaders in response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
“As Russian forces unleash their assault on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, we are resolved to continue imposing costs on Russia that will further isolate Russia from the international financial system and our economies. We will implement these measures within the coming days,” the White House said in a statement.
“We stand with the Ukrainian people in this dark hour. Even beyond the measures we are announcing today, we are prepared to take further measures to hold Russia to account for its attack on Ukraine,” it added.
As a result of Putin’s ongoing assault on Ukraine, @POTUS and the leaders of the European Commission, France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Canada decided to take specific measures to further isolate Russia from the international financial system.
