Prince Harry isn’t the first person you’d expect to see at a Texas rodeo. But that’s exactly who fans encountered at Stockyards Rodeo in Fort Worth over the weekend despite his wife Meghan Markle’s outspoken animal activism.
One event attendee told The Daily Mail how shocked they were to see the 37-year-old father of two in attendance. “It’s a quintessentially American event, where animals are made to perform,” the source told the publication.
The person went on to say how “shocking” it was to see Harry at that type of event, especially after the British royal disparaged the first amendment by calling it, “bonkers.”
“Given he has such a lack of respect for the First Amendment and his wife is such an animal rights activist — it is shocking he thought he could show his face here,” the source continued. “The funny thing is most people didn’t recognize him or care.”
Noted royal journalist and co-author of the unauthorized biography of Harry and Meghan, “Finding Freedom,” Omid Scobie shared a snapshot of the prince enjoying the Western-themed festivities to Twitter.

The caption said: “Living his best American life🇺🇸 Prince Harry was in Fort Worth, Texas this weekend and spent Saturday at the historic @cowtowncoliseum for the famous @StockyardsRodeo. The duke was spotted by locals enjoying some good ol’ Southern hospitality and a VIP tour of the venue.”
According to People, former bull rider-turned-trainer Cory Melton posted and deleted the same photo of Prince Harry and said the Duke of Sussex made a joke about his ability to compete at the rodeo.
“Prince Harry hanging out at the rodeo this week… We get a lot of rodeo royalty but this is the first prince I’ve seen,” the post shared by Cory’s company Melton Bull Co said. “Said he was going to enter the bull riding but the airline lost his rigging bag….”
“Where was Prince Harry Saturday night? Oooooh, just hanging out behind the bucking chutes at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo!! Loooove it!! Thank you for the visit!!” the caption on a photo posted by Stockyards Championship Rodeo Secretary Cindy Reid said. That post was also deleted later.
It’s all surprising because Markle is such an animal rights activist, which doesn’t jive with rodeos or animals performing any circumstances. Previously, the Duchess of Sussex had allegedly pressured her husband Harry into giving up participating in his family’s annual hunts.
Group hunting events are a treasured part of royal tradition. But in 2017, Markle was said to have pressured Harry to give up the hobby after he took part in a wild boar hunt in Germany, which made his then-girlfriend “uncomfortable,” The Daily Mail reported.
Harry subsequently skipped the Boxing Day hunt that year and hasn’t been hunting since. However, the former senior royal seems game to attend a rodeo at least.
