A heckler was maced and removed from superstar comedian Chris Rock’s standup show Wednesday night after he continued to shout “Will Smith” from his seat.
“Twice during the first show, a couple of members of the audience shouted: ‘Will Smith,’ drawing a far louder chorus of boos,” a Daily Mail report said.
The outlet said it witnessed “one man being dragged out by security guards,” adding, “Police confirmed that the man was maced and kicked out of the theater by multiple security guards.”
Rock, reacting to the “Will Smith” shouts, told the audience, “Is this how this tour is going to go?’”
During a segment at the Oscars on Sunday, Rock spotted actress Jada Pinkett Smith in the audience and cracked a joke about how she was going to be in the next “G.I. Jane” movie, referring to her bald head.
The mild joke apparently triggered Smith, her husband, who walked up on stage and slapped Rock across the face and then yelled at the superstar comedian to keep his wife’s name out of his “f***ing mouth.” A stunned Rock quickly transitioned back to the show.
Rock’s show Wednesday night was the first time he publicly addressed the slap.
When he walked out on stage the comedian was reportedly met with a loud standing ovation. “Let me be all misty and s***,” Rock reportedly said with tears in his eyes.
“I don’t have a bunch of s*** about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show I wrote before this weekend,” he told the audience. “I’m still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point I’ll talk about that s***. And it will be serious and funny.”
Rock went on to joke about “overweight people at Disney parks” and “his decision to get a vasectomy after seeing a 78-year-old Robert De Niro walking around with a child,” the Mail said, among other bits.
After the Academy made noise about their disapproval of Smith, the “I Am Legend” actor finally apologized for his actions on Monday evening.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” the 53-year-old wrote. “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about my Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris,” Smith added. “I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
