“Euphoria” trans star Hunter Schafer sent a message to trans kids in Texas and said for them to “stand firm in what you believe in.”
During the “Euphoria” Emmys FYC event at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles Wednesday, Schafer, who plays Jules on the HBO drama, was asked what advice the star had for trans kids in Texas after Republican Governor Greg Abbott called for investigations into minors getting “elective procedures for gender transitioning.” It comes at the 3:25 minute mark here.
“I lived in North Carolina when House Bill 2 was passed over there and it was illegal for me to use the women’s restroom,” Schafer told Variety magazine. “So, I’ve been there.”
“It’s f***ing gross, it’s awful,” the star added. “I think just stand firm in what you believe in. [Pointing to the heart] That’s in here, and their bulls*** rules can’t change that. That’s the real s***.”
Schafer plays a trans character on the show and co-wrote an episode in 2020 with creator Sam Levinson about being transgender.
“It sort of just happened naturally,” Schafer shared. “We were just talking about thematic stuff or a potential Jules special episode, and then I was going though some poetry and we were kind of just shooting the s***, and he was just eventually like, ‘You know, this kind of sounds like dialogue, do you want to write this together?’ It just sort of flowed and happened, but I was thrilled, and it’s to this day one of the most cathartic artistic experiences I’ve had.”
In February, Abbott sent a letter to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services asking the agency to “conduct a prompt and thorough investigation” of any reported instances involving minors receiving “abusive gender-transitioning procedures,” which he said should be classified as “child abuse under existing Texas law,” a press release read from the Governor of Texas.
“Because the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services is responsible for protecting children from abuse, I hereby direct your agency to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation of any reported instances of these abusive procedures in the State of Texas,” the press release added. “To protect Texas children from abuse, DFPS and all other state agencies must follow the law as explained in OAG Opinion No. KP-0401.”
“The letter notes that Texas law imposes reporting requirements upon all licensed professionals who have direct contact with children who may be subject to such abuse, including doctors, nurses, and teachers, and provides criminal penalties for failure to report such child abuse,” the press release continued. “The Governor’s letter also mentions that the law imposes a duty on DFPS to investigate the parents of children subjected to gender-transitioning procedures, and on other state agencies to investigate licensed facilities where such procedures may occur.”
