President Biden’s sister went on record saying Meghan Markle would make a welcome addition to the Democratic party and a fine presidential candidate.
The New York Post reported on the comments, which Valerie Biden Owens made during an appearance on Good Morning Britain Monday.
“It’s wonderful to have women in politics,” the 76-year-old political strategist shared. “The more women we have, the better our democratic system will work, with a better point of view, a different point of view and we embrace all women.”
“We welcome [Meghan] to come in and join the Democratic Party,” Biden Owens continued.
She responded to a question of whether Markle would “make a good presidential candidate one day,” by saying, “Yes, perhaps. Of course she will.”
Markle had to be more subtle about her political leanings after marrying into the British royal family, who have strict rules about remaining politically neutral in their public dealings. However, now that the former actress and her husband Prince Harry have been living in the United States for a couple of years, plus have stepped down from their positions as senior royals, there are rumors that Markle could pursue political office.
The Post noted how the Duchess of Sussex is potentially “forging connections with top Democrats with an eye on a possible career in politics” even though there’s no “solid evidence” this is happening.
Investigative journalist Tom Bower said he believes it’s “likely” that Markle will delve into politics. Bower is currently working on an unauthorized biography about the former “Suits” actress.
While the Duchess hasn’t officially announced a run for office, she has dipped her toes into the water by sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to express her support for paid parental leave.
“I’m not an elected official, and I’m not a politician,” Markle stated in the letter. “I am, like many, an engaged citizen and a parent.”
According to Marie Claire, she and Prince Harry also made a public statement on “vaccine equality” during a trip to New York. The couple’s non-profit Archewell also pledged to go net-zero carbon by 2030 as both are outspoken climate change awareness advocates.
The publication noted how Markle would almost certainly have to forgo her royal title if she was planning to run for a Senate seat in California, or for any other office. The Constitution holds that no person holding office shall accept a Title “of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State” without the consent of Congress.
