The mother of the Texas shooter who slaughtered 19 children and two teachers on Tuesday addressed the killings in an interview where she described her son as “quiet.”

“I have no words, I have no words to say, I don’t know what he was thinking,” the shooter’s mother said in an interview with the local CNN affiliate Televisa. Her father told CNN that she has been crying so much that one of her eyes is swollen shut.

“He had his reasons for doing what he did and please don’t judge him,” she said. “I only want the innocent children who died to forgive me.”

The killer’s mother described her son as “quiet,” saying, “He was very quiet. He was himself. He didn’t bother anyone — he didn’t do anything to anyone.”

On Thursday, the shooter’s grandfather, Rolando Reyes, said that he personally knows many of the families whose children were killed, telling CNN: “Some of them are my friends, and I’m going to have to face them some day.”

Shortly before the shooter drove to Robb Elementary School and killed 21 people, he shot his grandmother in the face at their home, piercing her jaw and upper cheek, according to CNN.

Reyes said that his wife will need serious reconstructive surgery, noting that she “did everything” for the teenaged school shooter, including cooking for him and picking him up from his late night shifts at the fast food restaurant where he worked.

The shooter’s tearful father said in an interview with The Daily Beast: “I just want the people to know I’m sorry man, [for] what my son did,” saying that his son is “a good person” who “stuck to himself.”

“I never expected my son to do something like that,” 42-year-old father said during the interview, which the Beast conducted on the porch of his girlfriend’s home where the killer’s father has lived for several years. “He should’ve just killed me, you know, instead of doing something like that to someone.”

The shooter’s father said that he was at work when his mother called to tell him what his son had done, according to the Beast. He panicked and called the local jail and asked if his son was there, and then realized that his son was dead.

“They killed my baby man,” he said of his son. “I’m never gonna see my son again, just like they’re not gonna see their kids. And that hurts me.”
