Reality star Caitlyn Jenner has thrown support behind a biological male who identifies as a female golfer who is hoping to compete in the LPGA tour after Jenner previously blasted a biological male who identifies as a female, Lia Thomas, for competing in woman’s swimming.
During the 72-year-old star’s appearance on Fox News’ “America Reports,” Jenner said that golf is a “totally different game” than swimming and that each sport should be looked at differently when it comes to transgender athletes. Jenner is backing 29-year-old Hailey Davidson, who underwent gender reassignment surgery last year and has been trying to get in the tour to compete. Davidson last competed as a male in a 2015 tournament, TMZ noted.
“I’ve been very consistent with how I’ve tried to approach these transgender athletes,” Jenner said. “It really depends on the sport. Every sport is different. Obviously, we saw with Lia Thomas, she had gone through male puberty, bigger cardiovascular system, it just wasn’t fair. And fortunately, we won that one.”
“Golf is totally different game,” the reality star added. “It is a game of touch and feel.”
Jenner talked about competing in LPGA tour events and said “these girls are really, really good,” noting that Davidson was “playing within the rules.”
“Honestly, for me, the jury is still out on this one,“ Jenner said. “I don’t know if [Davidson’s] going to be able to make it on the LPGA tour.”
“I don’t think she’s in a position where she’s gonna be dominating on the LPGA tour,” the star added. “To be honest with you, those girls are so good.”
The LPGA Tour changed its rules in 2010 to allow golfers who were not born female to compete.
In January, Jenner said during a Fox appearance that “biological boys … should not be playing in women’s sports. We need to protect women’s sports. Obviously, this is about Lia Thomas, who has brought a lot of attention to this issue.”
“First of all, I respect her decision to live her life authentically — 100% — but it also comes with responsibility and some integrity,” the star explained, as Jenner noted the unfair advantage Thomas has when swimming against women being born a biological boy.
“I don’t know why she’s doing it,” Caitlyn added. “She knows when she’s swimming, she’s beating the competition by two laps. She was born a biological boy. She was raised as a biological boy. Her cardiovascular system is bigger, her respiratory system is bigger, her hands are bigger, she can swim faster. That’s a known.”
