In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Academy Award winner Anna Paquin (“The Piano”) tore into critics knocking her for claiming to be bisexual while being married to her former “True Blood” co-star Stephen Moyer. Paquin asserted that her marriage to a man says nothing about her sexuality.
“I’m a #proudbisexual who is married to a wonderful human who happens to be a man,” she wrote. “If he doesn’t have a problem with it, why should anyone else?”
Paquin included the hashtags “#loveislove #f***bierasure #bipride.”
Paquin later responded to a comment lamenting how “bi” celebrities end up living the “white-picket-fence life.”
“I am getting tired of seeing ‘bi’ celebrities constantly advocate for it only to end up conventionally married to men with multiple children, living out the so-called white-picket-fence life,” said the comment.
“Ah yes … the ‘you aren’t queer enough’ BS,” Paquin responded.
Other commenters supported Paquin.
“I’m just here to validate and support and uplift and acknowledge you. I’m also a queer person in a heteronormative relationship, and I saw that god awful comment on that other post of yours, and there is exactly NOTHING about the relationships that we / other queer folk are in that define our identity or sexuality. Sending so much love,” said one user.
Anna Paquin has identified as bisexual since 2012.
“If you’re going to talk about some cause in a way that’s meaningful, you should identify why it means something to you,” Paquin told Zooey Magazine. “For a bisexual, it’s not about gender. That’s not the deciding factor for who they’re attracted to.”
Paquin’s defense of her bisexuality and marital relations came in the same week that singer Demi Lovato claimed non-binary status.
“Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras,” Lovato said in a Twitter thread. “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all- I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”
“This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” Lovato continued. “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way xox.”
