On March 2, 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that “Texas is OPEN 100%.”

“EVERYTHING,” Abbott continued on Twitter. “I also ended the statewide mask mandate.”

Beto O’Rourke, who failed to win the Democratic Party’s nomination as presidential candidate in 2020 and failed to beat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in a 2018 Senate race, immediately described the policy as “A death warrant for Texans.”

“Add them to the 44,000+ killed as he failed to confront the pandemic & botched the vaccine rollout,” O’Rourke continued. “And those who froze to death because he cares more about energy companies’ profits than keeping Texans alive.”

“Abbott is killing the people of Texas,” O’Rourke claimed.

On May 16, Greg Abbott celebrated his state’s record on COVID-19.

Today Texas reported:

  • * 0 Covid related deaths–the only time that’s happened since data was tracked in March, 2020.
  • the fewest Covid cases in over 13 months
  • the lowest 7-day Covid positivity rate ever
  • the lowest Covid hospitalizations in 11 months.

Thanks, Texans!

Just one day later, Abbott continued.

Today Texas reported:

  • A new 13 month low in the number of Covid positive cases
  • A new all-time low for the 7-day Covid positivity rate–now showing 3.74%
  • A new 11 month low in Covid hospitalizations.

Great job, Texans!

In addition, the Texas governor “issued an executive order on Tuesday that will ban local governments and schools from requiring face masks,” as reported by The Daily Wire.

“The Lone Star state continues to defeat COVID-19 through the use of widely-available vaccines, antibody therapeutic drugs, and safe practices utilized by Texans in our communities,” Abbott said in a press release. “Texans, not government, should decide their best health practices, which is why masks will not be mandated by public school districts or government entities.”

Critics of O’Rourke were quick to mock his absurd and inaccurate claims that Abbott’s reopening of Texas would be a “death warrant.”

The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh replied, “Any update on the death warrant for Texans? Are they all dead yet or what?”

Comedian and Washington Times columnist Tim Young replied, “How’s this going?”

Washington Examiner columnist Becket Adams tweeted, “just amazing work, beto.”

The Daily Wire’s Beth Baumann commented, “When things from the past come back to haunt you.”

“We can continue to mitigate COVID-19 while defending Texans’ liberty to choose whether or not they mask up,” Abbott said Tuesday.

In July 2020, O’Rourke described Texas Republicans as a “death cult.”

“This is a death cult. The Texas GOP. Only they want you to do the dying,” he said.
