Comedian Dave Chappelle responded to the controversy over billionaire Elon Musk’s hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live,” declaring that “no one can be woke enough.”
During an appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, Chappelle said that while he understands that people may wish to push a good cause, he denounced the woke tactics of shaming people.
“Like you said, no one can be woke enough,” Chappelle said. “I’m torn, because I like a warrior for a good cause, but I’m really into tactics. You’re not gonna nag people into behaving … In fact, if you continue with this tone, even if you’re right, you’ll be very hard to hear.”
Chappelle recalled once meeting Musk, hailing him as “incredibly kind.”
“I teased him about being the richest man on earth, and he took it with good humor,” Chappelle said. “What’s funny, I had hung out with him years ago, after I quit ‘Chappelle’s Show’ … we hung out on a tour bus, and he says to me that night … ‘I met you before.’ I’m like, ‘Well, I have no recollection.’ He looked kinda hurt.”
Chappelle was not the only celebrity to defend Musk’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in the face of some cast members allegedly getting upset to the point that the show’s executives allowed them to forgo appearing alongside him. In the days leading up to the appearance, none other than Michael Che and Pete Davidson defended his guest-hosting gig.
“I’m gonna ask him for, like, a Tesla or some s***,” Davidson said on an episode of “The Breakfast Club.” “The guy’s a genius. I don’t know why people are freaking out. They’re like, ‘I can’t believe that Elon Musk is hosting.’ And I’m like, ‘The guy that makes the Earth better kind of, makes cool things and sends people to Mars?’”
“I don’t know, I think white people just don’t like their billionaires, for some reason. It’s weird cuz we love our billionaires. If Oprah or Tyler Perry was coming, we’d be all excited about it,” Che said.
As The Daily Wire reported, angry leftists trolled Elon Musk’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” throughout the show, labeling it a “black hole of fun,” among other things.
“He stumbled nervously — albeit somewhat endearingly — through the rest of his scripted speech, sharing his ‘vision for the future’ (‘renewable energy’ and how ‘humanity must be a multiplanetary, space-bearing civilization’), and poking fun at his habit of making 4/20 and 69 jokes on Twitter,” The Daily Beast wrote.
“There were any number of reasons to be angry about ‘SNL’ tapping Elon Musk to host, including plenty of solid ethical and moral ones. Like the time he mocked people’s gender pronouns. Or that time he publicly threatened labor organizers at Tesla. Or any of the other many reasons,” wrote TheWrap “But on top of those things, there was another big reason that you might think would be important to the powers that be at ‘SNL,’ Elon Musk isn’t funny or entertaining in the least.”
