An armed suspect who was shot by an FBI agent outside of the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) headquarters in McLean, Virginia on Monday evening died while being transported to the hospital, the FBI announced in a tweet on Tuesday.
The FBI’s Washington Field Office said on Twitter that the agency will continue to investigate, but “as the review remains ongoing, we cannot provide any additional details at this time.”
The FBI added more deetails in another tweet by saying that the individual “emerged from his vehicle with a weapon & was engaged by law enforcement officers.”
The FBI did not explain the buildup to the incident, but CNN reported that the suspect drove up to the CIA’s gates that morning and made comments suggesting there was a bomb in the vehicle.
NBC News added that the suspect was mentally disturbed and had attempted repeatedly in the past to get into the CIA headquarters.
CIA security officers had reportedly been negotiating with the man throughout the day after he refused to move after trying to drive into the CIA facility and being stopped that morning.
Ever since an incident in 1993 in which a man shot and killed two agency employees and injured three others leaving the Langley compound, CIA headquarters has had enhanced security procedures, according to CNN.
