Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., on Thursday slammed Twitter for suspending one of her aides for several hours “in error,” according to the social media network, which she called an “unconstitutional overreach SILENCING our voices and freedom of speech.”
Twitter suspended Stefanik’s House communications director Karoline Leavitt for a few hours on Thursday, saying later that the “account was suspended in error,” through a spokesperson, according to Politico.
“This has been reversed, and the account has been reinstated. The account’s followers will take 24-48 hours to fully restore,” the spokesperson added.
Stefanik tweeted on Thursday: “BIG TECH on the MOVE! Twitter just suspended my Communications Director. An unconstitutional overreach SILENCING our voices and freedom of speech. Republicans are united in fighting back against Big Tech’s tyranny. Millions of Americans will not be silenced!”
The congresswoman later told Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast during an interview that Twitter “said it was a mistake, but again, it only happens to conservatives,” adding that this “is a reason why we need to break up big tech.”
Leavitt tweeted, after her suspension was lifted: “BREAKING: It appears I’ve been released from Twitter’s Conservative Jail!! This was not an “error,” as Twitter claimed. This was another purge in their ongoing effort to silence conservatives voices! We cannot back down to Big Tech Giants! Our movement is too important!”
She told Fox News, “The only reason I can think that Twitter would have suspended me is that I followed several Republican members of Congress and GOP activists at once last night, and within minutes, my account had been suspended.”
She said that before her suspension, she had shared a link to former President Donald Trump’s new communications platform, saying that suspension could be connected.
“Maybe because I’m sharing former President Trump’s website and tweeted out the official link?” she said.
“Republicans have been screaming from the rooftops for months that if they can silence the president of the United States, they can silence you,” Leavitt continued. “That is not just a Republican talking point. That is the truth. That’s what’s happening here.”
She added that as a “spokesperson for an official member of Congress going through one of her most contested news cycles in her career… I need access to the platform. The fact that Twitter is suspending me for no rhyme or reason is insane.”
