The House of Representatives should “of course” censure Rep. Maxine Waters for her call for protesters to become more confrontational if the jury deliberating in the case of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin acquits him of charges in the death of George Floyd, Sen. Ted Cruz said Tuesday.
“She does this over and over again,” the Texas Republican said on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom” about Waters, D-Calif. “She was on the streets encouraging protestors in Minneapolis to engage in violence and riots.”
Cities nationwide are preparing for violent riots to take place if Chauvin is not found guilty, Cruz added, and there are “Democrats like Maxine Waters who are encouraging that they want to see more stores looted. They want to see more police cars firebombed. They want to see the violence because they think it serves their political ends.”
But the “dirty little secret” among Democrats is Waters is not an outlier in their party, because “you have Democrats encouraging this violence,” said Cruz.
“The last time we had riots all across the country, Kamala Harris raised money for the bail to bail out the violent protesters who were committing these acts of violence,” Cruz said. “Today’s Democratic Party has decided that violence can benefit them politically. I think it’s wrong and we should condemn violence from any political perspective. Right-wing, left-wing, no wings at all, violence is never acceptable and we ought to be keeping people safe. Sadly that’s not where the Democrats are.”
Cruz also hit out against a push by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for their call to increase spending for the Green New Deal to $172 billion, after the Biden administration has proposed $40 billion.
“That is just the public housing piece,” he said. “That’s one piece of the Green New Deal. You look at the Biden infrastructure plan and it is in the trillions, $2.6 trillion. The full Green New Deal is $93 trillion. It’s $600,000 for every household in America.”
Cruz said he’d suggest to Democrats that they should try to find 10 households willing to contribute $600,000, with the “only caveat is their names can’t be Zuckerberg.”
“What they want to do instead is have the federal government put that debt burden and taxes on everybody,” said Cruz. “I think this is a serious mistake. I think it is bad for the economy. I think it destroys jobs.”
He added that President Joe Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be seeking “a lot more.”
Cruz acknowledged that “everyone wants a cleaner environment,” but said the best way to make that happen is through innovation.
“Last year, the country that led the world in reducing carbon emissions was the United States of America by far,” said Cruz, but he said the Biden administration also has a “deep antipathy to U.S. energy production.”
“The United States is energy independent today,” he said. “We’re the leading producer of oil and natural gas. The Biden administration wants to stop that. On day one he signed an order shutting down the Keystone pipeline, killing 11,000 jobs with the stroke of a pen.”
Union workers in Texas are “feeling under assault” as a result, Cruz continued.
The Biden administration chose “California environmentalist billionaires” over working Americans, and “that’s a serious mistake,” he continued. “It also caused the most important political shift in the last decade, which is the Republican Party becoming the party of working men and women. I think that’s who we are and who we should be.”
