Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., reaffirmed Tuesday he is considering a run against Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., in 2022.
Kelly defeated former Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., in November’s special election to fill the seat held by late-Sen. John McCain.
Biggs, who won a third House term last year, said Arizona should not have two Democrat senators. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., also represents the state.
“I am concerned for a lot of reasons with Mr. Kelly as our senator, so I’m looking at that seat,” Biggs told the Washington Examiner. “I don’t even know if I’m a viable candidate, so I’m looking at it.
“[Kelly’s] a Bernie Sanders supporter. He’s led one of the most anti-gun groups in the nation. There’s lots of reasons to look at that. Plus, we need to get that seat back here. If Arizona is really a 50-50 state, then we need one senator of each.”
Biggs, a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump, represents Arizona’s 5th Congressional District in Mesa, and is chairman of the House Freedom Caucus.
He first indicated interest in running for the Senate during an interview with The Hill in November following Kelly’s victory by 2% of the vote.
The Hill reported Monday that Biggs again was “kicking the tires” at a possible senate run.
