House Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Andy Biggs is considering running for Senate in Arizona next year, The Hill reported on Tuesday.
Biggs, who is one of former President Donald Trump’s biggest supporters in the House, told The Hill that he’s “trying to gauge how much support I might have” by “talking to people, seeing what it would look like, talking about how much it would be.”
His statement comes as Trump and his backers have said they would help boost candidates who have staunchly defended the former president and target Republican lawmakers who have rebuked him.
Biggs, however, said he has not spoken directly with Trump about throwing his hat in the ring.
Although no Republican has officially entered next year’s Senate race, recent internal polling commissioned by Biggs shows him with a large lead of 36.1% of likely voters in the primary, followed by Gov. Doug Ducey’s former chief of staff, Maj. Gen. Michael McGuire, with 2.6%. The most popular response in the poll was undecided, at 48.2%.
Although at this early stage Biggs appears well-positioned to win Trump’s endorsement in a Republican primary, azcentral points out he would also have to appeal to Arizona’s broad independent voters, who have recently elected several Democrat candidates.
This included Arizona voting for President Joe Biden in a state now considered one of the nation’s most competitive battlegrounds.
