The reason that Rep. Liz Cheney is no longer House Republican Conference chairwoman is that she was a distraction to what the party needs to be doing, GOP Rep. Byron Donalds told Newsmax TV’s “John Bachman Now” on Wednesday.

The Florida representative, who is a member of the House Republican Conference and House Budger Committee, stressed that “We should be focused on the things that the Biden administation and the Democrats are actually doing that are harming our country, not whether or not Liz Cheney is going to be conference chair any more.”

Donalds insited that the entire controversy was actually “really simple.”

He said that “when the media wants to cover you and the statements you make in regards to the former president, as opposed to what is happening to our country today, you are a distraction and that is why Liz Cheney is conference chair no longer.”

When asked about a report in The New York Times that 100 Republicans plan to release a letter soon threatening to form a new party, Donalds said that he does not pay any attention to that.

He said it is true about every party that when elections do not go your way, there is plenty of of finger pointing internally, pointing out that it also happens to the Democrats when they lose.

He stressed that the Republican Party “is going to move forward together, we’re going to continue to be unified” and win the House next year.

Donalds also commented on the popularity of his state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis.

“The reason why Ron DeSantis is at the top of the polls with respect to wining the Republican nomination in a few years is that he is not just Florida’s governor, he is America’s governor,” Donalds said. “He’s shown what is to lead our country, he’s shown what it is to lead our state, and I think you have a lot of Republican voters who would really embrace his leadership in the White House.”
