Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blasted President Joe Biden and said Republicans should call him what he is — a “liar.”
Christie made his remarks at a Republican Study Committee luncheon on Wednesday, according to Real Clear Politics.
“Oh, it’s ‘poor old Joe’ now? You can’t call ‘poor old Joe’ a liar?” Christie was quoted as saying. “No. You can. And we need to.
“The American people understand fairness. Right? That’s it. They say, ‘Oh, you’re just being negative to the president.’ No. No, I’m not being negative to President Biden. I’m holding him to the same standard you all held President [Donald] Trump to, and if it was fair then, it is sure as heck fair now.”
But Christie also said GOP politicians need to be judicious with their criticisms of the Biden administration and allow Democrats the opportunity to make unforced errors.
“When your opponent is in the midst of committing suicide, there is no reason to commit murder.” he said. “The result is the same.
“We’ve seen this playbook. Let them overreach. We don’t need to bludgeon them to death every minute. But what we do need to do is go after the soft underbelly. The soft underbelly are the lies.”
Christie also ripped Biden about the Democrat-pushed stimulus bill that was passed in the name of COVID relief.
“It makes my blood boil when this president stands up and tries to convince the American people that what he’s spending all this money on has something to do with getting your kids back to school, has something to do with getting more vaccines in arms, has something to do with making their lives better economically,” Christie said.
But he urged Republicans to stay focused.
“If we keep fighting amongst ourselves,” he warned, “we are the ones committing suicide, and we can’t have that.”
Christie added: “We can be tough without being crazy. We can be tough without being reckless.”
The former governor had also spoken out against Biden during a Sunday appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” taking aim at Biden’s representation of the election law recently passed in Georgia as a new form of “Jim Crow.”
“Language does matter,” Christie said. “We learned that the past 4 years, how you use it and what you say. And I said last week the president’s not telling the truth.
“And he’s not telling the truth about the infrastructure package. This is the care economy? This is the care infrastructure? It’s baloney.”
