Kentucky Congressman James Comer stated that the GOP is against passage of H.R. 51 which if passed, would make the District of Columbia located in Washington the 51st state.
Rep. Comer, who currently serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, told ”Spicer & Co.” that this is not about statehood for D.C. “It’s not about racism, it’s not about representation [for the district], it’s all about getting two new Senate seats so the Democrats can have enough votes in the Senate to pass their new socialist utopia that they all dream of,” he said.
This is just another power grab by the Democrats, he said, with more on the way soon.
The underlying appalling power grab has been confirmed by at least one Democratic House leader.
“Democrat Jamie Raskin, [U.S. representative for Maryland’s 8th congressional district] who’s also a member of the House Oversight Committee, has said in interviews that they just can’t get their legislation through the Senate and it’s just all about social justice and they need two new senators and the best way to do that is to make Washington DC the 51st state,” Comer added.
There are also constitutional problems with H.R. 51, as passage necessitates a constitutional amendment.
“If you don’t amend the Constitution, the 23rd Amendment gives Washington D.C. 3 Electoral College votes. If they pass this bill and it’s signed into law, then they’re going to have 6 Electoral College votes. They’ll have 3 for the new state of Washington D.C. in addition to 3 votes in the original Washington D.C., which will [then just] be an enclave around the White House.” He said.
He does not anticipate that the bill would pass scrutiny in the Senate. “I hope Joe (Manchin) does the right thing. We’ve seen the Democrats in the House have lost all their moral compass. Hopefully, Joe Manchin will do the right thing.”
In West Virginia there is strong opposition to the bill, he says. “22 attorneys general signed a letter today saying they oppose this legislation in West Virginia. Pat Morrissey, the attorney general of West Virginia was one of those 22,” he added.
“So, this is just a terrible power grab, it is another step for the Democrats effort to try to change America in in the liberal most radical way,” he concluded.
