The conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on Tuesday for the death of George Floyd brought swift reaction for all corners calling for continued calls for rooting out racism to trust in the criminal justice system.
Martin Luther King III, son of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., tweeted:
“Today, justice was served for the Floyd family, but we still live in a nation clothed in injustice. True justice for Black Americans can only come through a complete revolution of values. We need an overhaul of systems deeply rooted in racism.”
Chauvin, a white police officer, can be seen on video holding his keen on the neck of Floyd, a Black man for more than nine minutes while he pleads with Chauvin, saying he is unable to breathe. Bystanders also beg the Chauvin to relent, and a fellow officer can be heard asking if Floyd should be rolled on his side.
“Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd while hiding behind the badge. Today he got the verdict he deserved,” Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, tweeted.
“FOUND GUILTY ON ALL THREE CHARGES. Rest In Peace, George Floyd. You have changed the world,” said actress and activist Alyssa Milano.
“Clearly the verdict is supported by the facts, this case was extremely unusual. I’ve tried many murder cases, and it is rare that you even get a picture of the victim in a murder case. Maybe an autopsy photo, and here we have living, breathing person that the jury was able to relate to every day, day after day, watching the trauma of what he went through, begging for air, begging to breathe, Judge Jeanine Pirro, said on Fox News Channel.
“The facts are solid on this verdict, this verdict will be held on appeal, but right now what people need to understand is that the American justice system works,” Pirro said. “People believe in lady justice and you can give it a chance, it can work. For all those people who want to burn down streets, just let the court do its job and it will, it will survive.”
