Hillary Clinton appeared on Jennifer Palmieri’s podcast “Just Something About Her,” to discuss getting rid of the Senate filibuster rule, citing the rule as an impediment to voting rights.
The filibuster is a rule that gives the minority party power to declare a 60 vote or greater threshold. Hillary Clinton told the podcast, “The filibuster stands in the way of a lot of legislation and whether or not it can be either reformed and amended or eliminated is what we will find out in next weeks…It certainly should be lifted for constitutional matters, and I would put election law matters at the top of that list.”
Clinton compared getting rid of the filibuster to the Georgia election bill, which would not, as stated by President Biden, shorten the voting time from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Election Day. Georgian counties, at their discretion, could change the voting time, but the bill also allows for more weekdays to vote, so while the times could vary by county, more days to vote could become available.
Clinton mentioned the filibuster may be used to block legislation regarding the Second Amendment and that “could argue that the interpretation of the Second Amendment is a constitutional issue as well.”
According to Abby Phillip of CNN, the filibuster has been used many times to discuss racial matters. But the push to relate the topic to the Georgia Election bill seems a non-sequitur.
