“It’s easier to cross the border illegally into the United States” than it is to take a tour of the U.S. Capitol now that President Joe Biden is reversing all of former President Donald Trump’s policies that secured the border with Mexico, Rep. Michael McCaul said Tuesday.
“He’s allowing them to come in without applying in Mexico,” the Texas Republican said on Fox Business’ “Mornings With Maria.” “The catch and release policies are gone now. He stopped the building of the wall.”
But in Washington, D.C., after the violent protest on Jan. 6, a fence was built around the Capitol, coming at a time when the wall is coming down on the border, he noted.
“When the secretary of Homeland Security says, you know, don’t come now but maybe come later, it sends exactly the wrong message,” McCaul told show anchor Maria Bartiromo. “We’ve seen this movie before when you interviewed me on the Rio Grande River during the Obama administration. We are now going back to that same era.”
He added that he’s concerned that the immigration surge is also causing more COVID-infected people to enter the United States, and even if tests are taking place for COVID, catch and release means people are being left to go.
“They test them and then release them onto the streets and they’re trying to figure out how to deal with this policy,” said McCaul. “It’s absolute chaos down there, Maria and it’s sad because we made a lot of success triumphs under the prior administration to secure the border which is so important and I believe that Biden with the stroke of a pen has reversed all of this.”
And by reversing Trump’s policies, the Biden administration now owns the crisis at the border, the lawmaker added.
“Within a month they’ve created a crisis at the border,” McCaul said. “These are very sophisticated traffickers. Maria, I was a federal prosecutor down there for many years. Their business, they know what they’re doing, they know what our policies and laws are.”
Further, the message that is being sent by the Biden administration is “the worst,” he said.
“It’s basically we’re open for business, come on in, and so now they’re dealing with the crisis at hand,” said McCaul. “You’ve seen how dangerous it can be. It puts these children at risk as well. But also, the bad actors that could come into the United States worries me, and the drugs and the potential terrorists. This is really sad to see in my home state and all along the southwest border.”
McCaul also on Tuesday discussed calls for the Biden administration to lead a U.S. boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over China’s human rights abuses and its role in the COVID-19 pandemic.
“China is responsible for this pandemic that has killed millions of people and destroyed millions of jobs, and I think there should be consequences to that,” said McCaul. “In addition, the human rights violations of the Uyghur Muslim population that the prior administration and Congress defined as genocide and we issued sanctions on this, this almost is like going back to — I remember the Olympics in Nazi Germany. I think that the committee should consider moving the Olympic Games to some other destination.”
He said that short of that happening, he has a bill prepared to brief the athletes so they are aware of what they are facing.
“They’re going to be under tight surveillance,” he said. “I hate to punish these athletes that have gone through years of training but we don’t want to reward the Chinese Communist Party for all their malfeasance over the past — well, the past decade.”
