The Biden administration has tried to “put a blackout” on the news coming from the border because it doesn’t want the American public to know the extent of the crisis it created, Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, said Tuesday.

“They don’t want the pictures out,” Turner said on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings With Maria.” “I think the most important thing we can do is let the American people know, because the Biden administration doesn’t want them to know, doesn’t want the pictures out.”

President Joe Biden is faring well when it comes to handling the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new NPR/Marist poll. The survey shows that 2/3 of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the pandemic, including almost a third of Republicans, boosting his approval rating to 52% overall.

However, when it comes to immigration, just 34% of Americans say they approve of Biden’s actions, with 53% disapproving. This includes a quarter of Democrats who disapprove of the job. “This is a humanitarian crisis and the conditions are horrific,” said Turner. “They invited people in. President Biden himself was saying ‘we want people to come’ and they opened the border.”

But under former President Donald Trump, there were plans in place for dealing with migration and for keeping the border controlled and closed, Turner said.

Any sovereign nation, he added, must be able to control its border.

“This is a national security threat,” Turner said. “They don’t know who is coming. They are keeping them in horrific conditions. The border needs to be closed. It needs to be controlled. Everybody is for immigration, but controlled immigration, and this certainly is out of control.”

He added that with the thousands of migrant children coming into the country and being held because of Trump’s policies, “this is a human tragedy.”

“It’s also encouraging criminal organizations and human trafficking,” Turner said. “Our hearts go out to individuals who are taking the risk to travel across Mexico and attempting to get in the United States. The Trump administration had control over this. The reason why these facilities are filling up is because we had policies in place where people were kept at the border on the other side of the border and now with the Biden administration opening the border and uncontrolled immigration, uncontrolled migration coming in, these facilities are being overwhelmed.”

Meanwhile, there is speculation about whether Turner is planning to run for Sen. Rob Portman’s seat, after the Ohio Republican announced his retirement.

“I certainly am getting great encouragement and pressure to enter this race,” Turner said. “This is an important time for our country and this is just one of those stories that shows what the liberal Biden administration is doing that is having a devastating impact, both on our country and then other policies that are affecting our economy.”

It was “completely unexpected” for Portman to retire, Turner added, but “with my experience, my work in national security, I want to continue that and I think as we go across the state and listen to Ohio voters, we’re going to hear what they want and be able to marry that to the experience that I have.”

He said it’s also important to move the country forward and “oppose this liberal agenda that’s going to destroy our economy and destroy our country,” said Turner, adding that Trump’s “America First” agenda leaves “a ground foundation” on the economy the COVID crisis and more.

“We’ve had setbacks,” he said. “We need to rebuild the economy and at the same time continue to rebuild our military for national security to go against our adversaries and support our allies.”
