Fox News reported Monday that Chelsea Wolfe, a transgender athlete who qualified as an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team in women’s freestyle BMX, said last year that she’d like to earn an Olympic medal podium “so I can burn a US flag on the podium.”

In a post to social media last year, Wolfe fumed that, “My goal is to win the Olympics so I can burn a US flag on the podium. This is what they focus on during a pandemic. Hurting trans children.”

Wolfe made the post in response to a statement from then-President Donald Trump’s White House, pledging to allow only biological females to compete in women’s sports.

Wolfe, who was born male, became the first transgender Olympic athlete from the United Stated last week after qualifying as an alternate for women’s freestyle BMX.

The Daily Mail reported last week that Wolfe “qualified for the position by earning a fifth-place finish at the World Championships, but will only get a chance to compete in the Olympics if either qualifying rider Hannah Roberts or Perris Benegas drop out.”

Speaking to Fox News directly, Wolfe said the post has since been deleted and that it was not meant to disrespect her home country.

Anyone who thinks that I don’t care about the United States is sorely mistaken,” Wolfe told Fox. “One of the reasons why I work so hard to represent the United States in international competition is to show the world that this country has morals and values, that it’s not all of the bad things that we’re known for. I take a stand against fascism because I care about this country and I’m not going to let it fall into the hands of fascists after so many people have fought and sacrificed to prevent fascism from taking hold abroad. As a citizen who wants to be proud of my home country, I’m sure as hell not going to let it take hold here.”

The Biden administration has since softened the Trump administrations stance on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, though states have now begun the process of drafting and passing their own regulations on the matter.

On Monday, the Daily Wire reported, New Zealand’s Laurel Hubbard became the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympic Games after “dominating female weightlifting competitions.”

The International Olympic Committee gave the green light to male-to-female transgender athletes to compete in women’s events, but conditioned competition on evidence that the athlete has identified as female for a minimum of four years. Athletes competing as women also must meet certain hormonal threshold requirements.

Hubbard, at least, believe that there is no reason that biological women and male-to-female transgender individuals cannot compete against one another.

“Look, I’ve heard that and I think it’s incredibly disrespectful to the other competitors,” Hubbard said in 2017, per the Daily Wire. “I don’t believe there is any fundamental difference between me and the other athletes, and to suggest there is is slightly demeaning to them.”
