An Atlanta police officer is recovering following an apparent ambush where he was shot in the face. The officer for the Atlanta Police Department is said to be in stable condition.

During a press briefing outside of a local hospital on Wednesday, Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant confirmed an officer was shot when responding to a call of gunfire inside a Midtown apartment building.

According to law enforcement the responding officers were ambushed and returned fire, ultimately killing the suspect. Currently, investigators have said the officer who was struck in the head is coherent and speaking with police and their family.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms commended the Atlanta police for their bravery. “While so many of us run from danger, our officers run into danger,” said Mayor Bottoms. “The courage that was displayed, really I don’t have the words to describe.”

Authorities have yet to release the identities of everyone involved as it is an active investigation.
