Embattled New York Democrat Andrew Cuomo announced he would be officially stepping down from his position as governor in a matter of weeks following an attorney general report on sexual harassment allegations against him. Cuomo’s Tuesday announcement of his imminent resignation has been met with universal praise from across the political spectrum.

However, some of the Democrats celebrating have joined others in asking people to make sure Cuomo’s other scandals are not forgotten. Namely, they have called out Attorney General Letitia James’ other report on nursing home deaths in the state.

According to that bombshell report, Cuomo undercounted deaths in New York nursing homes by 50 percent when the first wave of COVID decimated the state. This cover-up followed a Cuomo order that forced nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients.

State Assemblyman Ron Kim (D) was one of the first individuals to call for Cuomo to resign, after Kim lost his veteran grandfather in a state nursing home.

In a recent interview, Kim was asked how he felt about Cuomo finally resigning amid the sexual harassment allegations. Kim said he and his colleagues, along with New Yorkers, are relieved he’s stepping aside. However, Kim said “we’re also a little worried that we may not get the accountability that we deserve to make sure we understand what went wrong.”

State Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D) was also asked about his feelings on the resignation. He said that Cuomo is a political fighter, so his resignation means there was no other way out for the governor. He added that the resignation buys Cuomo a couple extra weeks in New York, whereas a vote to impeach is an automatic removal from office.

With Cuomo leaving office, many New Yorkers have looked to pursue him criminally. If some Democrats get their way, those criminal pursuits could include further investigation into the thousands of unnecessary nursing home deaths due to Cuomo’s alleged negligence.
