During a 90-minute speech Saturday at the North Carolina Republican Party State Convention, former President Donald Trump signaled he does not plan on rejoining Facebook after news broke his suspension will last two years and then be reassessed.
“But they say they may allow me back in two years,” Trump said. “I’m not too interested in that. They may allow me back in two years. We got to stop that. We can’t let it happen. So unfair. They’re shutting down an entire group of people. Not just me, they are shutting down the voice of a tremendously powerful, in my opinion, a much more powerful and a much larger group.”
By a “much larger group,” Trump may have been referring to the fact that Facebook deplatformed and continues to censor conservative voices. Facebook banned Trump after the Capitol riot.
“Facebook’s ruling is an insult to the record-setting 75M people, plus many others, who voted for us in the 2020 Rigged Presidential Election. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this censoring and silencing, and ultimately, we will win. Our Country can’t take this abuse anymore!’ Trump said in a statement shortly after Facebook’s Oversight Board revealed the January 2023 date for Trump to potentially return to the platform if desired.
GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis went on the offensive against Big Tech in late May, signing a law that makes it illegal for companies to censor Florida residents with no rationale. There could be fines as much as $100,000 in damages if censorship claims are proven.
Watchdog group Project Veritas published a leaked Facebook memo on the day DeSantis signed the law outlining “vaccine hesitancy” speech controls from the tech giant. The group also spoke to two whistleblower employees.
A Facebook executive defended the ban of the former president over the weekend, claiming, “It doesn’t matter who you are — you can be the pope, the queen of England and the president of the United States — you cannot use our services to aid, abet, foment or praise acts of violence.” To date, it has not been proven that Trump aided, abetted, fomented, or praised any violence. Facebook continues to allow profiles for politicians proven to oversee slavery camps that engage in ethnic cleansing and rapes, such as Chinese dictator Xi Jinping.
