Superstar Amanda Bynes broke her silence after a judge terminated the conservatorship she has been under for nearly nine years following several concerning behavioral incidents nearly a decade ago.
“Following today’s decision by the judge to terminate my conservatorship, I would like to thank my fans for their love and well wishes during this time,” the 35-year-old actress explained in a statement shared by her attorney David A. Esquibias, reported People magazine in a piece published Tuesday.
“I would also like to thank my lawyer and my parents for their support over the last nine years,” she added. “In the last several years, I have been working hard to improve my health so that I can live and work independently, and I will continue to prioritize my well-being in this next chapter. I am excited about my upcoming endeavors — including my fragrance line — and look forward to sharing more when I can.”
During the hearing earlier in the day, Judge Roger L. Lund congratulated the “She’s The Man” star and said the conservatorship was “no longer needed or required.” The judge also said Bynes had “done everything the court has asked” of her and wished her “good luck.”
The “Easy A” star’s parents spoke out after the judge’s ruling and said they couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome, the attorney for Bynes’ parents, Tamar Arminak, shared.
Amanda’s mom, Lynn, said she was excited for the “next chapter” in her daughter’s life, Arminak added, reported NBC News.
“She could not be more proud of what Amanda has accomplished getting through the last few difficult years,” the parent’s attorney explained. “Both mother and daughter I know are happy to restart a relationship that doesn’t include this conservatorship and focus on the endless possibilities available to Amanda now that the conservatorship is over.”
The “What A Girl Wants” star’s mom, Lynn became the actress’ temporary conservator in 2013 and was granted full conservatorship a year later following a series of erratic behavior, including hit-and-run DUI incidents and reportedly starting a small fire in the driveway of a home in Thousand Oaks, California, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, before she was diagnosed with mental illness.
In 2018, Bynes announced she was ready to make a come back as she shared her past struggles with drug addiction, reported Paper Magazine at the time.
She talked about how she started smoking marijuana at age 16 but said that later “progressed” to do much harder drugs, like “Adderall,” on a regular basis.
“I started smoking marijuana when I was 16,” the former childhood star explained. “Even though everyone thought I was the ‘good girl,’ I did smoke marijuana from that point on.” “I didn’t get addicted [then] and I wasn’t abusing it. And I wasn’t going out and partying or making a fool of myself … yet.”
“Later on it progressed to doing molly and ecstasy,” she added. “[I tried] cocaine three times but I never got high from cocaine. I never liked it. It was never my drug of choice. I definitely abused Adderall.”
During the interview, Bynes also explained how she wanted to use her voice to help others who might be struggling “with substance abuse” as she announced she had been sober for several years.
