Pop star Britney Spears and her fiance Sam Asghari announced Sunday in a joint Instagram post that they suffered a miscarriage.
“It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy,” they wrote in the post. “This is a devastating time for any parent. Perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along, however we were overly excited to share the good news.”
“Our love for each other is our strength. We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family. We are grateful for all of your support. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult moment,” the couple said.
The 40-year-old mom of two had announced the pregnancy a month ago. It came months after the highly publicized end of her years-long conservatorship, during which Spears claimed she was forced to wear an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control despite wanting to have another baby.
“I lost so much weight to go on my Maui trip only to gain it back… I thought ‘Geez… what happened to my stomach???’ My husband said ‘No you’re food pregnant silly!!!’ So I got a pregnancy test… and uhhhhh well… I am having a baby…” she shared on social media at the time.
Spears and Asghari, a personal trainer, have been dating since 2016. The “Gimme More” singer shares sons Sean Preston, 16, and Jayden James, 15, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
During the hearing for ending her conservatorship, Spears went into detail on allegations of forced birth control.
“I would like to progressively move forward and I want to have the real deal, I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” Spears testified last June, per Variety.
“I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby. I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children — any more children. So basically, this conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good.”
Since then, the singer has drawn some concern from fans after posting fully nude photos on Instagram.
