Singer Britney Spears claimed in a social media post this week that a Catholic Church refused to allow her and then-fiancé Sam Asghari to get married in their church, which sparked pushback from the church.
“This is where I originally wanted to get married during COVID!!!!” Spears wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post, according to TMZ. “I wanted to go every Sunday…it’s beautiful and they said it was temporarily shut down due to COVID!!!! Then 2 years later when I wanted to get married there they said I had to be catholic and go through TEST!!!! Isn’t church supposed to be open to all????”
In the post, Spears included a photograph from inside St. Monica Catholic Community, a church in Los Angeles.
TMZ reported that the church told the publication that they never received a request from Spears to be married there and they were not aware of her ever attending the church. The church said that at least one spouse must be Catholic to get married in the church. Spears was raised Baptist.
Spears announced on June 10 that she and Asghari had gotten married in their home.
“Wow !!! Holy holy crap !!! WE DID IT !!! WE GOT MARRIED 👰🏼♀️ !!! Gggggeeeeezzzzz !!! It was the most spectacular day !!! I was so nervous all morning but then at 2:00 pm it really hit me … WE’RE GETTING MARRIED 💍 !!! I had a panic attack and then got it together,” Spears wrote. “The crew who created our home into literally a dream castle were fantastic !!! The ceremony was a dream and the party was even better 🎉 !!! So many incredible people came to our wedding and I’m still in shock 😱 !!!”

Spears’ ex-husband, Jason Alexander, took to Instagram during the event to livestream his attempt to crash the wedding.
The Daily Wire reported that Alexander and Spears were married for a grand total of 55 hours in 2004. Spears was set to marry Asghari, a personal trainer, in a ceremony of about 100 people, which would be absent most of her immediate family, including her two boys.
Video shows Alexander inside Spears’ home. TMZ reported that the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department responded to a called for trespassing.
“Where’s Britney? … I’m here to crash the wedding, bro,” Alexander said. “This is Jason… here to crash it,” he then tells a man.
“My name is Jason Alexander, Britney invited me here,” he said. “She’s my first wife, my only wife. I’m her first husband. I’m here to crash the wedding, because nobody is here but Sam. So where the f***’s the family and —”
Shortly after, Alexander was tackled by security and the video cut out.
