Whoopi Goldberg is currently serving a two week suspension for making comments on “The View” about how the Holocaust was not about race. Ever since, fans have been wondering if she’s just that ignorant, or if her statements were an example of anti-Semitism.
One interesting incident from the comedian’s past came up in conjunction with that question. A recipe she shared to a celebrity cookbook in the 1990s started making the rounds on social media. Instead of picking a regular ingredient roundup, Goldberg decided to make a joke of it by submitting “Jewish American Princess Fried Chicken.”
According to Daily Mail, the “View” co-host submitted the recipe to “Cooking in The Litchfield Hills,” a charity cookbook made for wealthy residents of the Connecticut suburb.
Goldberg, whose real name is Caryn Johnson, shared the following:
“Send chauffeur to your favorite butcher shop for the chicken (save the brown paper bag).
Have your cook 1) Melt equal parts oil and butter 3/4 deep in skillet over moderate heat. 2) Put flour, seasoned with remaining ingredients, into brown paper bag. 3) Rinse chicken parts and place in bag.
Then you tightly close top of bag (watch your nails) and shake 10 times,” she wrote. “Hand bag to Cook, go dress for dinner. While you dress, have Cook preheat oven to 350 degrees and brown chicken slowly in skillet. When evenly browned, have Cook place chicken in dish in oven. Have Cook prepare rest of meal while you touch up your makeup.
In about half an hour, voila! Dinner is served! You must be exhausted.”
The Daily Mail explained how the Anti-Defamation League spoke out against the recipe at the time, calling it “insulting” and “anti-Semitic.”
They said, “It’s a lousy recipe with insensitive and anti-Semitic ingredients. Whoopi should know better.”
The comedian shot back with a response from her agent saying, “Maybe (the critics) are not aware that Whoopi is Jewish, so she is certainly not anti-Semitic.”
The current CEO of the ADL also wasn’t amused by Goldberg’s Holocaust assessment on “The View.”
“No [Whoopi Goldberg], the [Holocaust] was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people – who they deemed to be an inferior race,” Jonathan Greenblatt responded to the comedian on Twitter.
“They dehumanized them and used this racist propaganda to justify slaughtering 6 million Jews. Holocaust distortion is dangerous. #ENOUGH”
Still, the ADL has come under fire for changing the definition of racism on their website to say, “The marginalization and/or oppression of people of color based on a socially constructed racial hierarchy that privileges white people.”
They changed it back after getting a ton of backlash. But critics say it undermines any arguments they’re making, however justified. Greenblatt appeared on “The View” shortly after the co-host said her piece to help explain how Hitler saw the Jewish people as an “inferior race” and explain that the Holocaust was absolutley racially motivated.
Greenblatt did also say that the notion of “racialized anti-Semitism” may “feel different” compared to the modern concept of racism “where primarily it’s about people of color.”
