Queen Elizabeth has been lying low ever since getting diagnosed with COVID-19 on February 20. The 95-year-old monarch has been understandably cautious, preferring video calls to in-person meetings as a general rule as the pandemic drags on for a second year.
However, the long-reigning monarch was back to work as of Monday. That’s when she hosted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Windsor Castle in the Oak Room.
This was her first official meeting in person with anyone since her COVID-19 diagnosis last month. People noted that a blue and yellow floral arrangement was on prominent display during the meeting as a nod to the Ukrainian flag.
“I have had the privilege of knowing Her Majesty for about 45 years now, and I can tell you that in my meeting with her this morning, she was as insightful and perspicacious as ever. We had a really useful conversation about global events, as we always do,” Trudeau said, according to Roya Nikkah, royal editor of the Sunday Times.
“I was able to talk about the situations we are facing and draw on her long experience from having seen much over these past decades,” Trudeau continued.
The meeting occurred days after the Queen made a “generous donation” to aid Ukrainians, Town & Country reported. Other senior royals including Prince Charles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridges, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex all made public statements denouncing Russia’s invasion of the country.
Prior to meeting with Trudeau, Her Majesty hosted family members for a visit a little more than a week ago. Prince William, Kate Middleton and their three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — were present at the Frogmore House gathering. Elizabeth’s other grandchild Princess Beatrice and her 5-month-old daughter Sienna attended as well.
Royal followers were rightfully concerned when the elderly royal contracted COVID-19.
“Buckingham Palace confirms that The Queen has today tested positive for Covid. Her Majesty is experiencing mild cold-like symptoms but expects to continue light duties at Windsor over the coming week,” a palace spokesperson said at the time. “She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines.”
The queen’s diagnosis came shortly after heir to the throne Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall also tested positive for the virus. All senior royal family members are believed to be vaccinated and boosted.
A palace insider discussed the multiple stressors Queen Elizabeth is facing that go beyond her recent illness. “It’s a drip-feed of negativity for the monarchy,” the palace insider told the publication following the queen’s diagnosis. “I’ve not known such a tumultuous time as this.”
They continued, “It just feels to be one thing after another for the Queen. It’s going to take a toll.” The insider also called the queen “stoical and mentally strong” amid all the chaos.
