Oscars co-host Amy Schumer was forced to explain one of her Oscars’ jokes after critics slammed her for referring to actress Kirsten Dunst as a “seat-filler.”
Explaining to the audience that some people were hired to make the auditorium look full, Schumer suggested that Dunst was one of those people and told her to get up and move so that she could sit down and have a conversation with Dunst’s partner, Jesse Plemons.
As Page Six reported:
During the 94th Academy Awards Sunday night, co-host Schumer, 40, approached the “Power of the Dog” star, 39, who was seated at a table with her partner and co-star, Jesse Plemons.
“Here’s a seat filler,” the stand-up star quipped, gesturing toward Dunst. “Honey, do you want to go to the bathroom?”
Schumer then pulled the confused-looking “Spider-Man” star out of her seat and directed her attention toward Plemons.
“Jesse, I loved you in ‘Power of the Dog,’” she told the actor, 33, to which he responded, looking horrified, “You know, that was my wife, Amy.”

When critics quickly flocked to Twitter to slam Schumer for disrespecting Dunst, Schumer was forced to clarify that the actress had been in on the joke from the start.
“Hey I appreciate the love for Kirsten Dunst. I love her too! That was a choreographed bit she was in on,” Schumer said. “Wouldn’t disrespect that queen like that.”
Following the show, Schumer also said that she was “still triggered and traumatized” after actor Will Smith slapped presenter and comedian Chris Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness.
Schumer laid out her feelings — along with a plug for her own Hulu series “Life and Beth” — in a post she shared on Instagram.
“I think we can all agree that the best way to unpack what happened is to stream my series @lifeandbethhulu and see me on tour this fall,” Schumer cracked.
“But for real. Still triggered and traumatized,” she continued. “I love my friend @chrisrock and believe he handled it like a pro. Stayed up there and gave an Oscar to his friend @questlove and the whole thing was so disturbing.”
“So much pain in @willsmith anyway I’m still in shock and stunned and sad,” Schumer concluded. “Im proud of myself and my cohosts. But yeah. Waiting for this sickening feeling to go away from what we all witnessed.”
Since Sunday, thousands have weighed in on the slap — and Smith, after apologizing to the Academy on Sunday, offered an apology to Rock a day later. Despite allowing him to remain and collect his best actor Oscar for “King Richard” immediately following the incident, the Academy announced on Monday that Smith would face a formal review for his actions during the broadcast.
