Fans of Netflix’s “Inventing Anna” found themselves sort of impressed by the fake German heiress, if only for her amazing ability to fool so many high profile people. Many wondered how much of the story was true since executive producer Shonda Rhimes stayed intentionally coy about it.
At least one aspect of Anna “Delvey” Sorokin’s story was true. After being found guilty of attempted grand larceny, three counts of grand larceny and four counts of theft services, the fake socialite was sent to an American prison. Now a source says the 31-year-old will be deported back to Germany, the New York Post reported.
Sorokin was allegedly scheduled to board a flight to Frankfurt Monday night, the source said, and she’s less than pleased with that outcome. The Russian native had been staying at Orange County Correctional Facility in Goshen, NY, since March 25 for allegedly overstaying her visa, according to the Post.
The dramatic miniseries “Inventing Anna” turned the nation’s attention to the saga of Sorokin and her relentless conniving, though some critics took issue with how Rhimes and crew appeared to glamorize the fake heiress while demonizing her friends who got conned, like Vanity Fair staffer Rachel Williams. The real Williams wrote a book about what she went through called “My Friend Anna” and called the Netflix series “a dangerous distortion.”
Sorokin arrived in New York City in 2013 and attempted to create a high-end members-only arts club. To get the funds to achieve that dream, the Russian native claimed to be a German heiress named Anna Delvey whose money was tied up in a trust. In reality, her father, Vadim Sorokin was a truck driver, while her mother owned a small convenience store.
The faux millionaire swindled hotels and acquaintances out of an estimated $275,000 by pretending she was going to pay via wire transfer while never coming through with the promised money. These lies are what landed Sorokin in prison. She spent close to four years incarcerated before being released on parole on Feb. 11, 2021. It wasn’t long before she was posting photos on Instagram bragging about her lifestyle once again.
Sorokin’s best friend Neffatari Davis told the Post that Sorokin “has a good heart, but she has a dark, twisted mind. She’s like a Tim Burton character — you love them, but if you’re watching them at night, they’re a little creepy. She doesn’t mean harm … but then again, she might!”
“Anna was only out for a few weeks before ICE scooped her up,” Davis also told the Post last month. “She was very sarcastic on Instagram … I think they were watching her.”
“They told her that her visa had expired, but, instead of being deported, Anna — being Anna — said, ‘I’m going to fight this.’ She thought it would be a quick fight. I think if she was a plain Jane and not in the media, she would have just been deported,” Davis explained.
