An Asian American City Councilwoman in Los Altos, California, was reportedly harassed by a racial justice activist for expressing doubts about a police reform bill.

Lynette Lee Eng became fearful for the safety of her and her family after community activist Kenan Moos, leader with the social justice group Justice Vanguard, allegedly sent her threatening text messages.

On Nov. 24, Lee Eng expressed a degree of opposition to one of the group’s demands. The group wanted to create a new online form that would submit complaints to the police department and an independent auditor. Lee Eng was concerned about the cost and felt she did not have enough information at the time of the city council vote. She opted to vote against it.

Following the council’s vote, Moos reportedly sent intimidating text messages stating his disapproval of Lee Eng.

“Your name will be all over the papers,” Moos allegedly said in a text message time-stamped at 12:32 a.m. “We know there are racists that supported you. You are trying to delay this. You lied to me in our discussion that you were going to support racial matters. You said you were the only one in favor and it looks like you are the only one against them. Very disappointing.”

In a follow-up text, Moos allegedly said that he was in “no way” issuing “a threat of any kind.”

Lee Eng told The Daily Wire that many of her campaign yard signs were illegally vandalized with stickers saying that she was a racist.

After receiving the text messages, Lee Eng explained her vote to her fellow council members “in order to protect [herself] and [her] family.” She did not mention Moos by name and never said that the activist had “threatened” her.

On December 15, Moos spoke at a city council meeting to lament Lee Eng for explaining her vote.

“It has now been two weeks since you criminalized Justice Vanguard and me,” Moos said. “Two weeks since you joined the Karens of America and the continued denigration of black people.”

Lee Eng told The Daily Wire that she is disappointed that she would be called a racist as Asians have been increasingly subject to racist acts in the past year.

“I am the only female Asian ever elected to serve on the Los Altos City Council,” Lee Eng said. “Asians have always been subjected to racist acts including violence, but as reported in the media, the number of these incidents have increased dramatically after the outbreak of COVID-19. This atmosphere certainly added to my concerns.”

Moos did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.

The proposal was drawn from Justice Vanguard’s “Police Task Force Recommendation.” The group demanded that the city council hand control of the Los Altos Police Department (LAPD) over to a “democratically established community control council, led by community members from groups most negatively impacted by racism and other forms of oppression.”

The community council would have power over the following:

  • Power over firing and hiring of police (including sergeants, captains, chief)
  • Power over deciding discipline for officer misconduct
  • Power over deciding to file charges for criminal abuse of power
  • Power over the police budget
  • Power over contract negotiations with the police officers’ association
  • Power to create a database for conduct complaints and subsequent discipline, to be shared with other police departments if fired officers seek re-hiring

They added that they “demand police out of all schools immediately” and that they “demand more mental health resources be made available to students.”

Justice Vanguard also demanded that the LAPD begin “collecting and releasing demographic data on their stops, arrests, and citations, as well as badge numbers of associated officers.”
