The course of true love never did run smooth, as the Bard once wrote. Especially when it has to contend with cancel culture.
After a final Bachelor episode saw 29-year-old Matt James sweep one lucky girl off her feet by telling her he could no longer see her until she “put in the work” of antiracism, the pair have at last been reunited.
Woke fans were dismayed to discover during the Season 25 finale that the woman the first black Bachelor in the show’s history chose was none other than the target of their outrage — Rachael Kirkconnell. Yet shockingly, the cattle-call for love once again did not result in a happily-ever-after ending.
During the “After the Final Rose” special, the former Wake Forest wide receiver revealed that he’d dumped Kirkconnell because he wasn’t convinced she understood the gravity of crimes like once attending an antebellum-themed fraternity party, having parents who may or may not have voted for Trump but at the very least wore MAGA gear, and sharing a PragerU video on Instagram. But he suggested he might be open to giving her another chance one day, saying, “There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. I have to take a step back and allow her to put in that work, and I’m looking forward to seeing her put in that work.”
Who wouldn’t swoon at that?
Well, it appears that day has finally come. In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, James revealed that he and Kirkconnell are together again and enjoying such romantic activities as having “critical conversations” about what James “[needs] in a partner—especially if that woman isn’t black” and discussing what it means to be an “ally.”
Sporting a new lumberjack-style beard and posing for soft focus photos next to a white rose bush, the modern-day Prince Charming also spoke to the Journal about how he’s keeping these days — investing in sustainable goods and cryptocurrencies and “reading and re-reading” Ta-Nehisi Coates’s book, “We Were Eight Years in Power.”
James also had some advice for ABC on how to fulfill its commitment to better represent BIPOC on the show going forward. “If you have different people of color all across the board, it’s going to help you tell a story that’s more representative,” he said. “If someone has never … been with someone who doesn’t look like them, they’re going to have a hard time.”
As for Kirkconnell, she hasn’t commented to the press since revelations of her renewed relationship with James broke, but paparazzi photos of the pair cuddling close as they walk through the streets of Manhattan do her talking for her.
Because nothing makes a girl feel special like the man of her dreams telling her he’s willing to take her back because, “It’s unfair to leave people without the ability to unlearn and be better.”
And they say fairytales don’t come true.
