There were some great storylines in week eight of the NFL season.
On Sunday, New York Jets quarterback Mike White came out of nowhere to become the first Jets quarterback since Vinny Testaverde to throw for 400 yards, Cooper Rush filled in for an injured Dak Prescott and completed a fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Vikings, and the New Orleans Saints beat Tom Brady and the Buccaneers with backup quarterback Trevor Siemian.
Unfortunately, Monday has brought with it bad news.
New Orleans quarterback Jameis Winston was carted off the field in the second quarter of the Bucs game, after injuring his knee, leading head coach Sean Payton to later break down in tears. Payton feared that the injury was significant, and as it turns out, it was.
On Monday, Payton confirmed that Winston suffered a torn ACL and MCL damage from a Devin White horse-collar tackle. Winston will miss the remainder of the season.
Siemian filled in and led the Saints to a 36-27 win as Taysom Hill has been out since week five recovering from a concussion.
“He’s doing well. He’s progressing. He’s on schedule. And all that’s good,” Payton said of Hill’s recovery. Payton was not willing to say if Hill will play against the Atlanta Falcons.
“We’re gonna look closely at what’s best for our team in this game. And as the week progresses, we’ll see how we want to play it out. And we’ll be ready to play Sunday,” said Payton, who said the first phase of the game plan is usually formulated by the end of Tuesday night. “We’ll grind away at the plan, pay attention to the information we’re getting from the training room, all of that, and be ready to go.”
The Tennessee Titans also received terrible news after a win — the Titans beat Indianapolis in overtime — announcing that All-Pro running back Derrick Henry will undergo surgery on his right foot Tuesday morning. ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that Henry could miss the remainder of the season, though the Titans did not provide a timeline for Henry’s recovery.
“Whenever that is, that’s when it’ll be,” head coach Mike Vrabel said. “I know that he’ll be around our team as soon as he can. I know that’s important to him. I know that’ll be important to our team. We will have to move on. We’ll have to move on, unfortunately, without him here in the short term and not look back.”
The loss of Henry is a major blow to Tennessee, who counted on their star running back more than any other team in the NFL. Even after rushing for just 68 yards on Sunday, Henry still leads the league in rushing with 937 yards, 288 yards ahead of Jonathan Taylor.
Tennessee does play in the very weak AFC South and has a three-game lead over the Colts in the division. The Titans have reportedly signed running back Adrian Peterson, signing him to the practice squad before he’ll be added to the active roster.
In other NFL news, the LA Rams made a major move, trading for eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller. The Broncos will receive a second- and third-round 2022 draft pick.
