House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) discussed the invasion of Russia into Ukraine on Wednesday during a press conference.

“It’s stunning to see in this day and age a tyrant roll into a country. This is the same tyrant who attacked our democracy in 2016,” Pelosi said Wednesday about Russian President Vladimir Putin, per Fox News.

Pelosi made remarks during a press conference after a congressional trip to Israel, the U.K., and Germany.

“This, my friends, is our moment. This is the Sudetenland,” Pelosi said, referencing Adolf Hitler’s expansion into the Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia that happened prior to World War II. “That’s what people were saying [abroad in Munich]. You cannot ignore what Putin is doing. Nobody, of course, is ignoring it. But you cannot take it any lighter than what it is — a total assault on democracy.”

As Fox reported, “Despite calls from Republicans that the U.S. should have imposed pre-invasion sanctions, Pelosi said she respects Biden’s judgment and the goal of the international community to be unified in its response.” She pushed back on questions from a reporter about whether or not the actions were too late to dissuade Russia.

“I think you are frankly wasting your time on something that is after the fact,” Pelosi said.

Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, was also at the press conference.

“I think the sanctions are just going to continue to increase and will have an ultimately crippling effect on many sectors of the Russian economy,” he said. “We have to make sure that those costs continue and that the Russian people see the costs of their dictator’s aggression.”

“That’s all you can do,” Schiff noted.

“If you’ve got a dictator like Putin, who amasses 100,000, 200,000 troops on the border of a much smaller, much weaker country and is determined to invade, then short of going to war with Russia, embarking on this brutal package of sanctions, I think, is the most effective way to raise costs on Russia,” he noted. “And I think the costs on Russia and the Russian people are sadly going to go up and up and up the longer that Putin persists with this naked aggression.”

“We haven’t seen the depths of these sanctions yet,” Pelosi also said.

“This is a very evil move on the part of Vladimir Putin,” she continued. “He is a KGB guy who happens to be probably the richest man in the world because of this exploitation of his own people.”

She also pressed the importance of keeping up a unified front with NATO and other allies in standing up to Russia, per The Hill, “a level of cooperation that might affect some elements of the response, she suggested, but would pay dividends for the strength of numbers.”

“Still, Pelosi predicted the sanctions would ultimately prove effective when Russia’s wealthiest people grow frustrated with the new limits on their finances and travel — and the country’s working class gains awareness of just how lavishly the oligarchs live,” the outlet added.

“The Russian people,” she noted, “have to see how they have been exploited by their own government.”

On Tuesday, the White House described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as just that — an “invasion” — as a precursor to the announcement of U.S. sanctions on Russia.

The Daily Wire reported, “The White House on Monday appeared hesitant to use the strict economic levers that President Joe Biden had promised should Russia invade Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin unilaterally recognized the independence of separatist regions in Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts on Monday, ordering Russian troops into the areas on a ‘peacekeeping’ mission.”

“After announcing new sanctions during a press conference on Tuesday, President Biden released a statement on Wednesday regarding additional sanctions on the Russian-owned company behind the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline,” The Daily Wire reported on Wednesday, adding, “Additional sanctions announced by Biden earlier this week included full blocking sanctions against two Russian financial institutions, and efforts to cut off the Russian government from Western debt, financing, and markets. This would prevent Russia from raising money from the West, and could be strengthened if necessary, Biden argued.”
