In a panic-stricken weekend editorial, The Salt Lake City Tribune opined that the Utah governor should use the state’s National Guard to bar unvaxxed Americans from leaving their homes in the name of COVID-19 safety. The editorial ran Saturday and included a laundry list of complaints against Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R), new state epidemiologist Dr. Leisha Nolen, and national leaders for supposedly surrendering to the virus.

“That wan fluttering noise you hear coming from the direction of the Capitol building is the sound of the state of Utah waving the white flag of surrender in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Tribune’s editors wrote.

“It’s tragic. It’s disgraceful. And there is lots of blame to go around,” the editorial continued. “Gov. Spencer Cox and the new state epidemiologist, Dr. Leisha Nolen, let it officially be known Friday morning that there are so few tests available in the state, and so many people who reasonably fear that they have contracted the coronavirus, that anyone who is feeling the kind of symptoms associated with the disease should just assume they are infected and stay home.”

The op-ed also blamed both Republicans and Democrats — even President Joe Biden — for acquiescing to supposed misinformation or enacting inadequate policies that could not slow the spread of COVID-19. The editors of the city’s largest paper decried those opposed to mask and vaccine mandates for supplanting safety with claims of protecting personal freedom.

As a result, the paper surmised that “we are free all right. Free to fend for ourselves. To watch our children lose weeks, months, or more of their precious educational opportunities. To wonder whether it is safe to go to work or to the store or to sporting events. To see businesses close for want of employees or lack of customers.”

As the Omicron variant spreads throughout the country, the paper also lamented that America “might have headed off omicron with a herd immunity-level of vaccinations, but that would have required a vaccination mandate, which our leaders refused. Instead, we get, ‘No one could have seen this coming.’ That is patently untrue. They were told what to do, and they refused.”

Finally, the paper concluded that if Utah were a “truly civilized place,” then “the governor’s next move would be to find a way to mandate the kind of mass vaccination campaign we should have launched a year ago, going as far as to deploy the National Guard to ensure that people without proof of vaccination would not be allowed, well, anywhere.”

The proposal is, of course, outrageous, but members of Congress Chip Roy (R-TX) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO) saw the editorial as a warning sign for all Americans that the Left likely wishes it could actually enact such a policy here in America.

“The Salt Lake City Tribune editorial board – while masquerading as journalists – call on the military to target their own neighbors,” Roy tweeted. “Remember – these people want to come after you.”

Boebert also said, “While we look at Australia, Italy and Germany as horror stories… the radical left looks at it and wishes that we had it here.”

So far, The Salt Lake City Tribune’s desire for armed forces being used on American citizens has not been realized by any American state.
