The creator of “Sex and the City” apparently changed her mind on being lonely without kids.
Candace Bushnell, 63, is best known for penning the book that would eventually inspire one of the most popular shows on HBO. While two out of the four main characters on the series become moms, that’s not a path the former sex columnist chose for herself.
In 2019, Bushnell expressed regret over her decision to forgo motherhood, especially after divorcing her husband Charles Askegard in 2012.
“When I was in my thirties and forties, I didn’t think about [becoming a mom],” the author told Sunday Times. “Then when I got divorced and I was in my fifties, I started to see the impact of not having children and of truly being alone. I do see that people with children have an anchor in a way that people who have no kids don’t.”
The interview went on to describe Bushnell’s then-new book, “Is There Still Sex in the City?” which explored the challenges of being single over 50. During the interview with Sunday Times, the SATC creator discussed all the ways she’s combated aging, including getting frequent Botox and fillers. She also said she considered vaginal rejuvenation surgery at one point.
But Bushnell has apparently changed her mind about her previous statements in the year 2021, which happens to coincide with the reboot of the original series that made her famous. The “Sex and the City” sequel “And Just Like That” premiered on HBO Max in December.
When journalist Jack Posobiec tweeted the link to the Daily Mail article detailing Bushnell’s previous statements, she replied to confirm her change of heart.
Why are you retweeting this old story? As a matter of fact I don’t regret not having children. I celebrate it and encourage other women to do the same! Come see my new show IsThere Still Sex in the City which just got a rave review in the New York Times. 😊

Meanwhile, the one-woman off-Broadway show Bushnell referenced has since been canceled when the star tested positive for COVID-19 on December 21 just before she was slated to take the stage. The show was supposed to run through February 6, but now the whole run was nixed.
Producer Marc Johnston promised a national tour in the future with engagements in Europe, Asia, and Australia. “We look forward to bringing the production back to New York at a safer time,” he said, according to Playbill. “as well as sending Candace around the world to tell the true story of the OG Carrie Bradshaw when it is safe to do so.”
Meanwhile, the series “And Just Like That” airs new episodes on HBO Max every Thursday. Recently, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) experienced the death of her husband, Mr. Big, and will need to navigate dating in the city while single in her fifties just like the real-life Bushnell. Carrie and Big also had no children but so far her regret or lack thereof hasn’t come up on the series.
