More than a year after a “racial reckoning” following George Floyd’s death has seen numerous people lose their livelihood after misspeaking on matters of race, virtually the entire legacy media have ignored reports that Hunter Biden repeatedly used the n-word.

Text messages from Hunter Biden’s phone, recovered from a laptop he left at a Delaware repair shop, reportedly show the president’s son calling his lawyer, George Messires, by the term “n***a.”

Hunter Biden made the references in December 2018 and January 2019, telling Messires, “true dat n***a,” “OMG n***a,” and using shorter variations of the term during playful banter with the attorney, who reportedly charges $845 an hour.

Biden also shared a meme that showed his father, now President Joe Biden, calling Barack Obama “my n***a.”

In another exchange, Hunter Biden told Messires, who is white, “I only love you because you’re black.”

Messires replies, “It’s so annoying when you interject with frivolity.”

Hunter Biden also made sporadic references to his penis and described God as “a fictional character from the imagination of the collective frightened.”

The British newspaper the Daily Mail published screen captures of the texts on Monday. Yet in the days since the texts surfaced, there has not been a single article or mention of the racially incendiary content in the New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, NBC News, ABC News, CBS News, or NPR.

There has not been a peep on shows ranging from “Cuomo Prime Time,” or “Don Lemon Tonight,” to “The Rachel Maddow Show,” and “The ReidOut.”

The media blackout stands in stark contrast both to the hypersensitive way reporters covered the Trump White House and how the media have treated obscure Americans as young as 14 who used the same term.

The media caricature of President Trump and his followers, whom Hillary Clinton deemed “deplorables” and “irredeemable,” led the media to denounce putative “dog whistles” which, in many cases, only they could hear.

“For the 4 years of Trump Administration @cnn reported on racial ‘dog whistles’. Hunter Biden actually used a racial whistle and CNN is SILENT,” wrote former White House spokesman Sean Spicer. (Emphasis in original.)

When Biden announced his candidacy in August 2019, he cited lingering racist sentiments in the United States as the reason he wanted to wage a “battle for the soul of this nation.”

“Turns out when Joe Biden was telling us what a racist country America is, he had someone very near & dear in mind,” wrote Megyn Kelly.

The media have typically made any mention of race — by anyone, of any age — a lead story nationally.

The day after Christmas 2020, the New York Times ran a 2,500-word article about a teenager titled “A Racial Slur, a Viral Video, and a Reckoning.” The teen had used the same term as Hunter Biden once, as a 14-year-old girl, as part of a Snapchat video. That video so angered fellow classmate Jimmy Galligan that he saved it and went public with it three years later, when she graduated, causing the University of Tennessee to withdraw her acceptance to the school and costing her a slot on its cheerleading squad.

“Society is far too busy making sure random teenagers get cancelled for repeating rap lyrics on Snapchat 10 years ago to care that Joe Biden’s son says the n-word,” wrote Allie Beth Stuckey.

The New York Times did not spare its own award-winning science reporter, Donald McNeil Jr., who resigned under pressure in 2019 after it came to light that he repeated a racial slur in order to ask a student about the context in which someone else had used it, while he chaperoned a field trip to Peru.

What separated these and numerous other cases from Hunter Biden?

“Hunter Biden is the actual embodiment of unearned privilege in America,” wrote Cockburn at The Spectator. “And nobody loves giving a double standard to the actually powerful more than the American press.”
